The Department of Basic Education is once again opening its doors to thousands of unemployed youth through the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) as part of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI). This program aims to provide temporary job opportunities to South African youth as Education Assistants (EAs) and General School Assistants (GAs). Applications will be open from 22 April to 9 May 2025, with contracts beginning on 2 June 2025. This opportunity is exclusively available to youth who register through the SA Youth platform.
Job Description
The Education Assistant role includes supporting teachers in classrooms, preparing teaching materials, assisting with administrative duties, and improving learners’ reading and learning outcomes. The General School Assistant will assist with general maintenance, sanitation, COVID-19 compliance duties, safety, and security around the school premises.
Successful candidates will be placed in public schools located closest to the address they provide on their SA Youth profile. It is crucial that applicants do not visit schools directly to apply; the only valid application route is through the sayouth.mobi platform.
Ideal Candidate
To be considered for these roles, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Be a South African citizen
- Aged between 18–34 years
- Currently unemployed
- Not participating in any form of education or training
- Not receiving any government grants (excluding the Child Support Grant)
- Not enrolled in any learnership or internship during the contract period
- Live within 5 km of the school they are applying to (or 30 km for farm/rural schools)
Preference will be given to youth with no prior participation in BEEI programs.

Role Responsibility
Education Assistant (EA):
- Assist teachers with lesson preparation and class activities
- Help with marking and learner assessments
- Provide reading support and tutoring
- Support learners with special education needs
- Organize classroom materials and maintain a clean learning environment
- Perform basic administrative duties
General School Assistant (GA):
- Support with school maintenance and sanitation
- Help with COVID-19 compliance measures
- Maintain safety and orderliness around school premises
- Assist with security, gardening, and cleaning tasks
- Offer technical support if placed in ICT-focused roles
